Using the LaTeX exam class

February 20th, 2010 by Nathaniel

If you need to use the LaTeX exam class on Ubuntu, you will need to manually grab the latest version of exam.cls from  Phil Hirschhorn’s website. It goes into the /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/exam/ directory on Ubuntu. If you don’t have this, you can’t use some of the new features like \ifprintanswers, for example. I guess someone needs [...]

Makin’ Apple Cake

December 27th, 2009 by Grace

We tried out a new recipe this Christmas. It was a little ironic because the recipe is supposed to be a Hannukah recipe. Anyways…we tried our hands at making Apple Cake.

Well, it happened. One of our old junk buckets from 1994 finally gave out. Nathaniel’s Mazda is no longer with us. Now we have a nice shiny 2007 Mazda6!

A view from the top of Craggy Pinnacle on the Blue Ridge Parkway

We recently took a quick trip to the wild wooly mountains of western North Carolina. We took some photos, and we also want to highlight the highlights of our trips in case anyone else wants to duplicate our efforts.

What happened to Dell?

July 11th, 2009 by Nathaniel

Dell used to be a decent company. What happened? Grace got a Dell Photo 924 printer as a present a few years ago. It’s a rebranded Lexmark X615 (I have heard, but obviously nobody is confirming this!) It doesn’t have drivers for GNU/Linux (or Mac). It’s described as an expensive paperweight by some people, and accurately too. To get to the point, the power adapter went bad on it, so I thought I would get a new one and sell it so that we could have one that works on GNU/Linux. To my surprise, the new adapter from Dell is $50.

Rated R

July 3rd, 2009 by Nathaniel

Would you rather have your kids see a movie with (possibly explicit) scenes of people killing each other, or with (again, possibly explicit) scenes of people making love to each other? Think about it. I’m not the first to ask this question, and I hope I’m not the last.

Goodreads

May 18th, 2009 by Nathaniel

I just found about a site that is great for book readers. It lets you keep track of, rate, and find new books to read. You can see my profile here. It’s kind of like something you might find on Facebook, but for those of us who don’t use Facebook it’s nice. There is also a way to add a plugin to Wordpress, but I haven’t quite gotten that set up yet.

Dual Monitors w/ Dual Video Cards in Fedora 10 & Ubuntu 8.10

January 2nd, 2009 by Nathaniel

There’s more than one way to skin a cat, and there are at least four ways to set up dual monitors in GNU/Linux.

  1. Xinerama (the right way)
  2. nVidia TwinView (the way that supports companies that want to control how you use your computer)
  3. Matrox MergedFG (another good way)
  4. BigDesktop (ATI’s analog of option 2)

I don’t believe options 2 and 4 are really options for me since I do not like the idea of paying for a video card and not being able to use it freely. I will describe my setup and include my xorg.conf as well, for Fedora 10. I’m hoping that it will also work for Ubuntu, and I’ll post on that ASAP.
