Ways to give this holiday season

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Today I sat down and pondered what gifts to get my wife. I realize that one of two things is going on.

  1. We already have plenty of stuff, and I shouldn’t give her anything.
  2. I’m lazy, and a bad husband for not being creative enough to give her something she will truly enjoy.

It’s probably a combination of both. I look around at the way we live, and I see no reason to panic over the recession we’re in. We’ve got it so good, and by most people’s standards we are struggling to get by!

So, one of the things I plan to do this season is just give to a couple of organizations I’ve been meaning to support, but haven’t yet supported. Here are a few that could use some help if you’ve got a few extra dollars. I may add more as I think of them.

What are we?

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Are we what we do, what we’re made of, or are we what we think? We must be partly what we’re made of; flesh, bones, blood, genes, etc. We must be what we do, because our experience is the foundation for our thought. We must be what we think, because in the absense of thought we would do very little beyond what our instincts compell us.

But we think based on our acts, and we act based on our thoughts, so are we one, both or neither? Maybe we are born like a snowball on the top of a hill, just a tiny speck of snow at first, and then, given a mothers nudge into the world and our instincts, we roll in some initial direction. We gather snow and roll along, but if we hit a bump we lose snow. Finally we come to rest at the bottom of the hill.

For a brief moment we sit in tranquility, and our heart gladdens as the sun comes out and shines down upon us, bringing a wonderful peace to the world. Then we melt.
